The Reception of the Body

Rev. Beverley Sealy-Knight

With faith in Jesus Christ, we receive the remains of our sister, Corene in the Church of God, for burial. Our sister was washed in Holy Baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit. Let us therefore, with confidence, pray to God our Heavenly Father, the Giver of life, that he will raise her to perfection in the company of the Saints.

V. The Lord be with you.
R. And also with you.

V. Let us pray

O God of grace and glory, we remember before you this day our sister, Corene. We thank you for giving her to us, her family and friends, to know and to love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In your boundless compassion, console us who mourn. Give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life, so that in quiet confidence we may continue our course on earth, until, by your call, we are reunited with those who have gone before; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All: Amen.

The Sentences

Jesus said. I am the resurrection, and I am the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and who ever lives and believes in me shall never die. John 11:25-26

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his compassion never fails: every morning they are renewed. Lamentations 3:22-23

Jesus said, Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, believe also in me. John 14:1

I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of god in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39

If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord, so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. Romans 14:8-9

We brought nothing into the world, and we take nothing out. The Lord gives, and the Lord takes away: blessed be the name of the Lord.Job 1:21

The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. Deuteronomy 33:27

Hymn 480: Thy way not mine O Lord (CPWI hymnal)

1. Thy way, not mine, O Lord,
However dark it be;
Lead me by Thine own hand,
Choose out the Path for me.

2. Smooth let it be, or rough,
It will be still the best;
Winding or straight it leads
Right onward to Thy rest.

3. I dare not choose my lot;
I would not if I might:
Choose Thou for me, my God,
So shall I walk aright.

4. The Kingdom that I seek
Is thine; so let the way
That leads to it be thine,
Else I must surely stray.

5. Take Thou my cup, and it
With joy or sorrow fill,
As best to Thee may seem;
Choose Thou my good and ill.

6. Choose Thou for me my friends,
My sickness or my health.
Choose Thou my cares for me,
My poverty or wealth.

7. Not mine, not mine the choice,
In things both great and small;
Be Thou my guide, my strength,
My wisdom and my all.

The Collect

Almighty God, we remember before you today your servant Corene, and we pray that, having opened to her the gates of larger life, you will receive her more and more into your joyful service, that, with all who have served you in the past, she may share in the eternal victory of Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The First Lesson: Revelation 21: 2 - 7

And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

And the one who was seated on the throne said, 'See, I am making all things new.' Also he said, 'Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.' Then he said to me, 'It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. Those who conquer will inherit these things, and I will be their God and they will be my children.

Psalm 23 - (Crimond)
  1. The Lord's my Shepherd, I'll not want.
    He makes me down to lie
    In pastures green; He leadeth me
    The quiet waters by.
  2. My soul He doth restore again;
    And me to walk doth make
    Within the paths of righteousness,
    Even for His own Name's sake.
  3. Yea, though I walk in death's dark vale,
    Yet will I fear no ill;
    For Thou art with me; and Thy rod
    And staff me comfort still.
  4. My table Thou hast furnished
    In presence of my foes;
    My head Thou dost with oil anoint,
    And my cup overflows.
  5. Goodness and mercy all my life
    Shall surely follow me;
    And in God's house for evermore
    My dwelling place shall be.
Second Lesson: John 14:1-6
‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.’ Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Hymn 427: Through all the changing scenes of life

  1. Through all the changing scenes of life,
    In trouble and in joy,
    The praises of my God shall still
    My heart and tongue employ.
  2. O magnify the Lord with me,
    With me exalt His Name;
    When in distress to Him I called,
    He to my rescue came.
  3. The hosts of God encamp around
    The dwellings of the just;
    Deliverance He affords to all
    Who on his succour trust.
  4. O make but trial of His love;
    Experience will decide
    How blessed are they, and only they,
    Who in His truth confide.
  5. Fear Him, ye saints, and you will then
    Have nothing else to fear;
    Make you His service your delight;
    Your wants shall be His care.
  6. To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
    The God Whom we adore,
    Be glory, as it was, is now,
    And shall be evermore.
The Address
The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God
the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the
right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn: Thine for ever! God of love,

1. Thine for ever! God of love,
hear us from thy throne above;
thine for ever may we be
here and in eternity.

2. Thine for ever! Lord of life,
shield us through our earthly strife;
thou the Life, the Truth, the Way,
guide us to the realms of day.

3. Thine for ever! O how blest
they who find in thee their rest!
Saviour, guardian, heavenly friend,
O defend us to the end.

4. Thine for ever! Shepherd, keep
us thy frail and trembling sheep;
safe alone beneath thy care,
let us all thy goodness share.

5. Thine for ever! Thou our guide,
all our wants by thee supplied,
all our sins by thee forgiven,
lead us, Lord, from earth to heaven.

The Commendation
The Rev. Beverley Sealy-Knight

Give rest, O Christ, to your servant, Corene, with your saints,
All: where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.

You only are immortal, the creator and maker of mankind; and we are mortal, formed of the earth, and to earth shall we return. For so did you ordain when you created me, saying, "You are dust, and to dust you shall return." All of us go down to the dust; yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
All: Give rest, O Christ, to your servant with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.

The Lord's Prayer:

Let us commend our sister Corene to the mercy of God our Maker and Redeemer.

Deliver your servant, Corene, O Sovereign Lord Christ, from all evil, and set her free from every bond; that she may rest with all your saints in the eternal habitations; where with the Father and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Into your hands, O merciful Saviour, we commend your servant Corene. Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive him (her) into the arms of your mercy, in the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.

Rest eternal grant to her, O Lord:
And let light perpetual shine upon her.

May her soul, and the souls of the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in Peace.
Amen.

Mother's Union Benediction

HYMN 672

  1. O Jesus, I have promised
    to serve thee to the end;
    be thou for ever near me,
    my master and my friend;
    I shall not fear the battle
    if thou art by my side,
    nor wander from the pathway
    if thou wilt be my guide.
  2. O let me feel thee near me:
    the world is ever near;
    I see the sights that dazzle,
    the tempting sounds I hear;
    my foes are ever near me,
    around me and within;
    but, Jesus, draw thou nearer,
    and shield my soul from sin.
  3. O let me hear thee speaking
    in accents clear and still,
    above the storms of passion,
    the murmurs of self-will;
    O speak to re-assure me,
    to hasten or control;
    O speak, and make me listen,
    thou guardian of my soul.
  4. O Jesus, thou hast promised
    to all who follow thee,
    that where thou art in glory
    there shall thy servant be;
    and, Jesus, I have promised
    to serve thee to the end;
    O give me grace to follow,
    my master and my friend.
  5. O let me see thy footmarks,
    and in them plant mine own
    my hope to follow duly
    is in thy strength alone;
    O guide me, call me, draw me,
    uphold me to the end;
    and then in heaven receive me,
    my Saviour and my friend.

   Nunc Dimittis (KJV)

LORD, now lettest thou thy servant
 depart in peace:
 according to your word

For mine eyes have seen thy salvation:
 which thou hast prepared
 before the face of all people;
 to be a light to lighten the Gentiles:
 and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son:
 and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning,
 is now, and ever shall be; World without end.
Amen.

The Committal

HYMN 533

  1. O for a closer walk with God,
    a calm and heavenly frame;
    a light to shine upon the road
    that leads me to the Lamb!
  2. What peaceful hours I once enjoyed!
    How sweet their memory still!
    But they have left an aching void
    the world call never fill.
  3. Return, O holy Dove, return,
    sweet messenger of rest:
    I hate the sins that made thee mourn,
    and drove thee from my breast.
  4. The dearest idol I have known,
    whate'er that idol be,
    help me to tear it from thy throne,
    and worship only thee.
  5. So shall my walk be close with God,
    calm and serene my frame;
    so purer light shall mark the road
    that leads me to the Lamb.

HYMN 232

  1. MY God, how wonderful thou art,
    thy majesty how bright,
    how beautiful thy mercy-seat,
    in depths of burning light!
  2. How dread are thine eternal years,
    O everlasting Lord,
    by prostrate spirits day and night
    incessantly adored!
  3. How wonderful, how beautiful,
    the sight of thee must be,
    thine endless wisdom, boundless power,
    and awful purity!
  4. Oh, how I fear thee, Living God,
    with deepest, tenderest fears,
    and worship thee with trembling hope,
    and penitential tears!
  5. Yet I may love thee too, O Lord,
    almighty as thou art,
    for thou hast stooped to ask of me
    the love of my poor heart.
  6. No earthly father loves like thee,
    no mother, e'er so mild,
    bears and forbears as thou hast done
    with me thy sinful child.
  7. Father of Jesus, love's reward,
    what rapture will it be,
    prostrate before thy throne to lie,
    and gaze and gaze on Thee.

HYMN 413

  1. GUIDE me, O thou great Redeemer,
    pilgrim through this barren land;
    I am weak, but Thou art mighty,
    hold me with thy powerful hand;
    bread of heaven,
    feed me now and evermore.
  2. Open now the crystal fountain,
    whence the healing streams doth flow:
    let the fiery cloudy pillar
    lead me all my journey through;
    strong deliverer,
    be thou still my strength and shield.
  3. When I tread the verge of Jordan,
    bid my anxious fears subside:
    death of death, and hell's destruction,
    land me safe on Canaan's side
    songs and praises
    I will ever give to Thee.

HYMN 496

  1. And can it be that I should gain
    an interest in the Saviour's blood?
    Died he for me, who caused his pain
    For me, who him to death pursued?
    Amazing love! How can it be,
    That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me!
    Amazing love! How can it be,
    that thou, my God, shouldst die for me!
  2. 'Tis mystery all! the Immortal dies:
    Who can explore his strange design?
    In vain the first-born seraph tries
    to sound the depths of love divine.
    'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,
    Let angel minds inquire no more.
    'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,
    Let angel minds inquire no more.
  3. He left his Father's throne above -
    so free, so infinite his grace -
    emptied himself of all but love,
    and bled for Adam's helpless race:
    'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
    for O my God, it found out me!
    'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
    for O my God, it found out me!
  4. Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
    fast bound in sin and nature's night;
    thine eye diffused a quickening ray -
    I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
    my chains fell off, my heart was free,
    I rose, went forth, and followed thee.
    My chains fell off, my heart was free,
    I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
  5. No condemnation now I dread;
    Jesus, and all in Him, is mine;
    Alive in Him, my living Head,
    and clothed in righteousness divine.
    Bold I approach th'eternal throne,
    and claim the crown, through Christ my own.
    Bold I approach th'eternal throne,
    and claim the crown, through Christ my own.
