The Athanasian Creed

The Athanasian Creed is a Christian statement of belief focused on Trinitarian doctrine and Christology.

It was the first creed to explicitly state the equality of the three hypostases (states / substance) of the Trinity. It also differs from the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed and the Apostles' Creed in that it includes strong condemnation for those who disagree with its statements.

Widely accepted in Western Christianity, the Athanasian Creed is used in public worship less frequently today, but the creed's influence on current Protestant understanding of trinitarian doctrine, including in the Anglican Community, is clear.

Athanasius of Alexandria was traditionally thought to be the author of the Athanasian Creed, and gives his name to its common title.
